Parental involvement in children's early reading - Literature review Example Reading adds numerous dimensions to an individual’s personality; hence parents want their children to get used to reading from a yong age itself. Invariably parents are found discussing the means and modalities to be adopted to make reading feel and look interesting, enjoyable and fun to their children. Parents look for reasons to convince their children about the fact that reading is a skill that is like a key to master their life. Quite often elders purposely pick up a magazine, newspaper or a book and start reading in front of their children sending positive signals to the children about the importance of reading. In fact it is noted that children who lag behind in their reading skills receive less reading practice (Allington, 1984), miss opportunities to develop reading comprehension techniques (Brown, 1986) and may acquire a negative notion about reading if they are presented with reading material that is advanced to their skills. However, the psychologists have researche d extensively on the development of reading habits of children, and found it evident that early reading habits developed in the child’s formative years (initial five years) have a lasting impact on his or her behavior (Beth M. Phillips, 2009). Research indicates that the concept of literacy as a skill set and knowledge base begins to develop during infancy and is continuously enriched during the early childhood phase by exposure to language, printed materials, and opportunities for experimental and instructional counters with literacy materials such as books, magazines, alphabet toys etc (Lonigan C. J., 2006), (naeyc, 2009), (Wagner, 1994). Particularly, literature shows that oral language, phonological responsiveness, and print knowledge are key components of a strong emergent literacy foundation (Whitehurst, 1998). A longitudinal study spanning 10 years conducted by Cunnigham and Stanovich reveals that reading habits developed in 1st grade by a child have considerable impac t in reading engagement when the he or she is in 11th grade (Anne E. Cunningham, 1997) hence noticing that early success at reading acquisition is the key to unlock a lifetime of reading habits. The role played by parental involvement and other experimental factors such as book surrounds, audio-visual aids of learning, socio-economical circumstances and culture in early development years of a child has been at the heart of much theorizing and research in development psychology and form an important part in cultivating reading habits in children from early years. (Cunningham, 1994); (Burgess S, 2002); (Daniel J. Weigel, 2006). This literature review studies the varied research available on a number of aspects related to infants/young children’s early reading fondness. The queries around which the literature review was conducted are: (i) The importance of parental involvement in children’s early reading and its affect on children’s reading attainment at school (ii ) Encouraging parents to read to their children at home (iii) The importance of bedtime stories and (iv) The importance of discussing vocabulary and illustrations with young children. Dramatic Iron In Tragedy Essay Dramatic irony is endemic in the experience of the tragedy; people get shocked when tragedy strikes but they will murmur underneath that they had seen it coming though the victims did realize it. Neighbors and friends read signs of death, they are afraid to it directly or try to tell it indirectly and the victims can not believe or just cannot understand. Tragedy sometimes strikes when least expected, Lindsay a beautiful young Woman of two, separated from her husband because he abused her physically, her estranged her husband did not accept the separation though it was authorized by a local judge. He visited her house often and without notifying her in advance, he claimed that house was still his home because they had bought the house together before he started in drinking before that ruined their relationship and turned their home into a battle field. Lindsay had no problem with that he was still the father of her children, though she no longer loved him, in fact she was seeing granted so that they could marry. She knew Andy would be jealousy if he got a wind that there was another man in her life but didn’t think much about it and when Andy bumped on them kissing on the coach, she didn’t think there was anything to worry about, furthermore they had decided that they should move on, in the best way each one knew. Andy reacted coolly, and seemed to be okay as the shook hands with Lindsay’s new man, she was surprised by his calmness and understanding. When Andy offered to take Lindsay and their children out for dinner, she suggested that her new boyfriend should also as he had already met him and even implied that if he was seeing someone he should also come with her. It didn’t seem to be a good ideal to her man but she managed to convince him and together they left in Andy’s car towards a local restaurant. Andy was quite jovial through out the evening, talking nostalgically of the old times they had shared as a family, he made it clear that he was fine and would respect. Lindsay’s decision to move on, he promised to help hasten the divorce to set her free. Andy drove his family and their new friend home, but as soon as he parked the car, he left outside and he held a pistol in hands he pulled he trigger and shot Lindsay and her man as he mocked them, telling them they can marry in hell. Luckily he did not kill his children but he turned the pistol to it and placed it on hid head, pulled the trigger and died on the spot. Lindsay was dead, her children became orphans, and she knew that Andy still bred her; some of her friends had warned her that it was too soon to enter into another relationship but she had not hindered their advice. They knew Andy would get crazy with jealousy, some of them would not even believe that he had not started a fight with Lindsay’s boyfriend on the first day he savo together. Family members must have worried about Andy’s welfare especially after they realized that Lindsay was saving someone else, they knew how possessive he was with her, the guessed that he could harm the man they knew that there was no way to take the pain and reaction he felt and so they just waited for time to heal his wounds. However, tragedy struck and all they could now say was they had seen it coming. Most tragedies that happen are as a result of all careless mistakes for instance when someone dies in road accident, people will always say they knew it would happen, may be they will talk about his careless and fast driving or say that he left very angry or struck, they saw him getting into the vehicle but did not stop him and he goes and trashes and dies. In every tragedy there is dramatic irony, and no matter how many tragedies strike people are always shocked and they never learn to stop the. Dramatic irony s endemic in the experience of tragedy, think of the humblest that killed may in the united states, the US had now with Iraq, they knew they would strike them but did not take much precautions neither did they try to stop them, until the tragedy struck. When a bus gets involved in an accident, the lucky passengers that bus had been driving careless before the us crashed, they will have felt it before it happens but do nothing to stop it. Existing customers tend to purchase more than new customers and studies show that costs to retain customers are 80% lower than costs to generate new customers. There are also many benefits associated with existing customers. An increase in existing customer satisfaction leads to: - Increased positive word of mouth - Less reason to offer costly loss-leaders to generate traffic - Existing customers usually spend more than new customers - The profits earned from each individual customer grow the longer they remain loyal to the firm. (McLaughlin et al 1998) Retail Brand The retail brand is one thing that customers will always look at. What makes up the retail brand? Everything in the store that makes that particular store different from every other store makes up the retail brand. The lighting, the atmosphere, the music, the colour and the layout all go into making up the brand. The perception that a customer has of the stores image is the retail brand. Lab Report: Antibiotic Evaluation by the Kirby-Bauer Method Introduction Chemical antimicrobial agents are chemical compounds capable of either inhibiting the growth of microorganisms or killing them outright. Those which are taken internally to alleviate the symptoms of or promote healing from disease are called chemotherapeutic drugs, and among these is a class of compounds called antibiotics. In order for a chemotherapeutic drug to be classed as an antibiotic, it must be produced by a microorganism such as bacterium or fungus or at least derived from a chemical produced by one.It must also be capable of killing or inhibiting the growth of other microorganisms and of doing so when taken in very small quantities. To study whether a microbial product qualifies as an effective antibiotic, a standard procedure called the Kirby-Bauer method is employed. This method, which is the procedure recommended by the US Food and Drug Administration, was devised by William Kirby and A. W. Bauer in 1966. In the current protocols involved in the Kirby-Bauer method, Mueller-Hinton standard agar is used as the medium for bacterial culture.The pH of the standard agar is 7. 2 to 7. 4 and it is poured exclusively to a depth of 4 mm. The medium is heavily inoculated with bacteria and paper disks containing enough of the antibiotic under study to create an optical density of 1 (the McFarland standard) are placed on top of the cultures. By examining the results of incubation in the form of a zone of inhibition around each disk after incubation, it can be determined how effective each antibiotic is against any given bacterium. A minimum inhibitory concentration can then be deduced for the given antibiotic vs. he specific bacterium tested so that appropriate dosage may be determined. Resistant bacteria cultures will show a small or no zone of inhibition if their growth is not sufficiently inhibited for the antibiotic to be a viable candidate in treating infection by that organism. Sensi tive cultures, on the other hand, will be appreciably inhibited in their growth or, ideally, eliminated entirely in a relatively large radius around the McFarland standard disk. In this case, the antibiotic under study might be prescribed as a useful counter to illness brought on by that particularly bacterium.In the experiment discussed here, we tested eight antibiotics against four common opportunistic pathogens, namely Streptococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Of these, the first two are Gram positive and the latter pair are Gram negative. The eight antibiotics tested were: Ampicillin, a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits the final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to receptors within the cell wall. The result is a porous cell wall and subsequent lysis carried out by the bacteria's own enzymes.It is effective against many bacteria, both Gram positive and Gram negative, and is particularly used in treating infect ion by E. coli, Salmonella typhosa and Enterococcus faecalis, among others. (DrugBank) This antibiotic is a semi-synthetic derivative of penicillin, which is itself an antibiotic produced by the fungus Penicillium notatum. Bacitracin, a mixture of polypeptides obtained from Bacillus subtilis var Tracy. It inhibits synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer in Gram positive bacteria by preventing the function of a molecule that transports components to synthesis sites.Bacitracin has a low threshold of toxicity when taken orally or injected, but it has found application as a topical ointment in the prevention of wound infection by Staphylococci. (DrugBank) Chloramphenicol, a broad spectrum antibiotic that is produced synthetically but which was originally discovered in a Streptomyces bacterium. It can be employed against several types of infection but most notably has found application in combating typhoid fever cholera. This antibiotic inhibits protein synthesis by suppressing the function of the 50S subunit in bacterial ribosomes.Chloramphenicol is bacteriostatic but does not kill bacteria. It also has a low toxicity threshold when ingested, and so it is now used almost exclusively to combat life-threatening illness or infection. (DrugBank) Erythromycin, which is produced by a Streptomyces and functions as a protein synthesis inhibitor in much the same way as Chloramphenicol. It is much less toxic than Chloramphenicol and is used to combat such diseases as whooping cough, diptheria, and pelvic inflammation due to syphilis. (DrugBank) Novobiocin, one of the aminoglycoside antibiotics.This class of antibiotics works by binding to the bacterial 16S rRNA and causing the misreading of tRNA. Because of this, the bacteria synthesizes incomplete or toxic polypeptides, resulting in the death of the bacterial cell. Novobiocin can be used to treat infection by Gram negative bacteria and Mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is not effective against anaerobic b acteria, however, and is not often used against Gram positive infections because other antibiotics that are less toxic to the patient are available for this purpose. DrugBank) Moreover, Novobiocin is known to bind to and alter the function of DNA gyrase, effectively stopping proper replication in the bacterial cell and thus bactericidal. Penicillin G, another antibiotic of the beta lactam class. It is used primarily against Gram positive bacteria such as the Streptococci but is also effective against some Gram negatives such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae and the spirochete Treponema pallidum, which is responsible for syphilis.Penicillin G inhibits synthesis if peptidoglycan by the same mechanism as in Ampicillin. (DrugBank) Polymyxin B, a mixture of polypeptides derived from Bacillus polymyxa. It can be used bactericidally against most Gram negative bacteria and is applied most often against urinary tract, blood, and meningal infections of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It has no effect upon Gr am positive bacteria. It kills bacterial cells by binding to a removing lipids in the cell membrane.Due to this mechanism, however, Polymyxin B also damages eukaryotic cells and thus sometimes proves to be a neuro- and nephrotoxic in humans. (DrugBank) Tetracycline, synthesized from chlortetracycline, a compound produced by a Streptomyces. It works by binding to the bacterial ribosome and interfering with protein synthesis and is effective against a wide range of Gram positive and negative bacteria, including the Mycoplasma and the bacteria responsible for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and nongonococcal urinary tract infections. DrugBank) Material and Methods Cultures:Streptococcus faecalis Staphylococcus aureus Escherichia coli 1 Pseudomonas aeruginosa One person each in a team of four heavily inoculated two Mueller-Hinton agar plates with one of the cultures listed by aseptic transfer from a broth culture using a sterile cotton swab. Each plate was marked off into four segments, a total of eight sectors. One McFarland standard disk containing one of the eight antibiotics tested was placed, using alcohol-flame sterilized forceps, in the center of a sector.After incubating for 18 hours at 37Â °C, the diameters of the clear zones (zones of inhibition) around each McFarland disk was measured with a standard ruler to the nearest millimeter. The measurements obtained were matched against a chart (Claus 407) to determine whether the bacterium was resistant, sensitive, or intermediate in susceptibility to the antibiotic used. The numbers against which these measurements are matched take into account the difference in zone sizes caused by variations in diffusion rates through agar in the antibiotics tested. Since that antibiotic is known to be effective only agai nst Gram negative bacteria, this observation is in keeping with expected results.As a Gram positive, one would expect, as we observed, that it would be sensitive to polypeptide inhibitors, such as Penicillin G and Ampicillin, as well as protein synthesis inhibitors, such as Tetracycline and Erythromycin. Novobiocin, while not often used against Gram positives due to concerns about its toxicity, is known to be effective against Gram positives as well, which is borne out by these observations. Like S. faecalis, S. aureus is a Gram positive, and so would be expected to be sensitive to the same antibiotics and resistant to Polymyxin B. Our observations verify this as well. E. coli is Gram negative, and our observations show it to be sensitive only to Ampicillin, Erythromycin, Novobiocin.It was, however, resistant to Penicillin G, demonstrating that there is some chemical factor which allows one beta lactam antibiotic to inhibit this bacterium (Ampicillin) while another (Penicillin G) do es not. This is likely due to the difference in chemical structure of the two. Penicillin G lacks an amino group, which is present on Ampicillin. It may well be that the presence of a partially-charged amino group on Ampicillin allows it to be uptaken by the bacterium more readily than Penicillin G. (Deacon) More unexpectedly, E. coli was resistant to Chloramphenicol, even though this antibiotic is useful in inhibiting other Gram negative bacteria. It may be that the E. oli strain used in this experiment has developed a resistance to this particular antibiotic. P. aeruginosa also proved to be resistant to Ampicillin, Bacitracin, Novobiocin, and Penicillin G. This suggests that the chemical structure which allows Ampicillin to inhibit E. coli is not effective in the case of this bacterium, which is sensitive to neither of these beta lactams. Bacitracin is only useful against Gram positives as well, so it had no noticeable affect upon P. aeruginosa. On the other hand, this culture was sensitive to Polymyxin B, Tetracycline, Chloramphenicol, and Erythromycin, as one would predict for a Gram negative. Its resistance to Novobiocin is due to its having a modified DNA gyrase (Miller 674).It is worth noting in this case that while the bacterium is resistant, Novobiocin does have some effect at a standard concentration, and higher concentrations can be used to kill the organism. Such concentrations, however, would also be toxic to the patient if taken as a chemotherapeutic dosage. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria has been an ongoing phenomenon since shortly after the widespread use of penicillin, the first antibiotic, began. The rate at which this occurs has increased as the availability and employment has increased since then, and it has now become a significant medical problem. The major reason for this is that the use of antibiotics acts as a selective pressure. Those bacteria which carry a mutation on their plasmids that make them able to s urvive treatment give hem access to a niche which non-resistant strains cannot exploit, leading to their proliferation both in infected individuals and ultimately in the environment in general. The use of antibiotics kills not only pathogens, but also normal microflora which might otherwise prevent virulent bacteria from establishing a foothold in the human body. Thanks to the phenomenon of transformation, in which living bacteria can incorporate naked genetic material left over when other cells are lysed for reasons other than antibiotic sensitivity, resistance genes can cross between genera. For example, the Staphylococci can incorporate resistance genes from Bacilli and Streptococci.Added to this are resistance genes that exist as transposons found in the main bacterial genome and which can be transmitted to other members of the same species by temperate phages via the process of transduction. These mechanisms have resulted in the arisal of such things as Vancomycin-resistant str ains of S. aureus, responsible for a usually-lethal nosocomial infection that, ironically, is carried by the very bacteria that Alexander Fleming first observed as being susceptible to penicillin, the original antibiotic. Western Borrowed Muslim

The Muslims have been a part of the American History ever since the Pre-Columbian times. The Early explorers used maps that were made by Muslims. At the time, the Muslims had advance Geographical and Navigational information. Also, aside from this, during the time when African slaves were imported in the Americas, half of the slave population could be estimated to be Muslims. The Msulims arrived in Europe in different ways, these were through, Muslim Explorers, Muslim Armies, Traders, and through Scientific Research and Arabic Manuscripts. Europe being influenced by Muslim Culture was famous for exploring the Western Continent. These are some instances in History that could usher a great influence in Culture. Islamic Science In 750 AD, Abbasid caliphs of Baghdad, helped Science not only to thrive, but also spread towards the West(Spain) and East(Central Asia) in a period of over six hundred years. Influenced by Greek, Indian and Persian Culture, the early Arab Muslim scholars were able accrue an insurmountable amount of scientific knowledge. In doing so, they were able to make it flourish through their own innovations and discoveries. Astronomy and Mathematics were two of the bodies of knowledge which the Muslims paid attention to. Astronomy was particularly important to them specifically because of their religion. In Muslim Religion, one must pray towards a specific direction, specifically towards Mecca. Wherever a Muslim follower is, he must pray towards that direction, and at the time, they did not rely on any instruments such as a compass, but simply relied on the stars. Mathematics is relatively important to them as well with regards to dividing their property with regards to Inheritance in the Islamic Law. Although Science developed with the help of Islam’s, there are no active figures in Science that were Muslims. But during the 12th and 13th Centuries, the Research paper done by these people were translated from Arab to Latin and was passed to the western continents. Medical Arts A book that may be found in on-line, Islamic Medicine, Proviedes studies and various essays pertaining to different Physicians and scholars which would contain chapters on Islamic Medical Ethics, euthanasia and AIDS. The advance stages of Arab Medicine came in 12th and 13th Century, wherein we can find entries pertaining to Medical Schools flourishing in the Muslim Society. Some achievements of Arab medicine that were overlooked by the west was Muslim(Arab) roots of European Medicine, and the Discovery of how Pulmonary Circulation works in the Body. In fact it was discovered later by two doctors in the U. S. that the Pulmonary Circulation was indeed discovered by a Muslim that goes by the name of Ibn Nafis. This proves that the Pulmonary Circulation was not discovered in the 16th Century by the Europeans, but by Ibn Nafis who was actually a famous physician of the 13th Century. Alchemy and Chemistry Alchemy is often related to magic. It is described as the Magical transformation of different kinds of metal, specifically; Lead, into gold which is the most precious metal of the time. Alchemy in reality is the precursor to Modern Chemistry as we know it. A record from the 14th Century of the Arabs maid by Abu al-Qasim Muhammad Ibn Ahmed al-‘Iraqi, pertained to a book which was about the cultivation of Gold. Literature and Poetry An Arab named Al Biruni, born in Khawarizm(Caspian Basin), who lived in 1050’s was a man of letters and words who gave the Arabic Culture a universal dimension. No Room for Snark Unless you are JA Konrath and your brand is snark, dont try to weave it into your writing persona. It will backfire. Someone will label you crass. Many will quit buying your work readers as well as editors. As an editor, pitches come to me in the guise of Sunday clothes and good manners, which is good. We should present our best self. However, the true person arises when I reject a pitch. Well, if this doesnt work, then what does? Just give me a subject and Ill write it if you dont like this. Why doesnt this work? Im most certain it fits your guidelines. Whatever. Screw you or Forget you or Fill-in-the-blank you. Do you discriminate against fill-in-the-blank? You are an elitist b-. While these writers may not have been memorable before, they become memorable after these remarks. It works the reverse as well. I listen at conferences, workshops, and events where names bigger than mine put on shows, shake hands, meet and greet the room and represent themselves to authors as well as each other. There are a few agents I would never pitch because Ive heard them make fun of their clients, the writers around them, even the speakers at the podium. Theres a big name in the publishing industry I heard making fun of someone on a panel for pretending to be an author. Many people forget that shy writers listen harder. You are a professional. Keep it professional. Yes, I know as well as anyone that some days you want to snap back and speak your mind. This was in opposition to the claim by white scholars that the inhabitants of Egypt in North Africa were white. He argued that rather, Africans had a wide variation in skin color, hair type and facial shape just as happens among other human races. I believe Diop was as racist as the white scholars. His perception was that the scholars conveniently selected white pharaohs and ignored the original black ones to show Egypt as a white civilization. Diop did researches determined to prove that ancient Egyptians bore similar physical traits as present day black Africans. He went further to claim that, linguistically, ancient Egyptian was related to his contemporary Wolof language of West Africa. In conclusion, I believe most of Diop’s efforts and work were aimed at wrestling civilization claims from the Western world. He was filled with an inferiority complex and tried to overcome it by attempting to link his Wolof ethnicity with the Egyptians. I also believe that is the reason he insisted on placing the human civilization credit upon the Egyptians, whom he claimed to be black.

Knowing Minds Is A Matter Of Authority Essay The idea or the concept that I wanted to discuss which I find most interesting is the poem â€Å"What a Wonderful World† by Louis Armstrong. I find it interesting because of the details on how he described things around him. He mentioned seeing trees of green and red roses and he can even see them bloom. How the tress feed the birds and how the birds scatter the seeds, how the flower provides foods for butterflies and how the butterflies transfer the pollen, they help each other to survive. Armstrong uses variety of phrases to describe the beauty of nature. His words persuaded me so much that after hearing the song, I myself also find the world so perfect, so beautiful, and so magical. The concept or idea that I found to be problematic is Antonio Damasios studies about Spinoza. He discuss in details the human mind and behavior, stressing on emotion and feelings, decision-making, recollection, communication, and imagination. It was a good stuff and he was indeed very good when he discuss things in his books, however I consider it to be problematic because it didn’t answer all the questions being asked. I find his idea about equating the human nature’s equal to bad condescending and biased. I believe that each human being is naturedly good and if given a chance to do good will do right. We have one thing in common we are all human being . And it is already innate of us to be humane. We were created in God’s image and being the reflection of our good Maker man in his truest sense is good. The book entitled â€Å"Mind Into Matter†, by physicist Fred Alan Wolf, resonates the â€Å"Knowing Minds Is A Matter Of Authority† by Rupert Stasch. They both support an idea about the importance of the mind and how it controls everything in the human body. They support each other ideas about the mind, the human will, and how it affects one’s behavior toward something.

Types, causes, and advantages and disadvantages of monopolies Monopoly is the situation in which there is a single seller of a product (i.e., a good or service) for which there are no close substitutes. The word is derived from the Greek words monos (meaning one) and polein (meaning to sell). Governmental policy with regard to monopolies can have major effects not only on specific businesses and industries but also on the economy and society as a whole. Types Oligopoly: Is a situation in which sales of a product are dominated by a small number of a relatively large seller who is able to collectively exert control over its supply and prices. Cartel: Is a type of oligopoly in which a centralized institution exists for the purpose of coordinating the action of several independent suppliers of a product. The best example today is the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Trust: Popular way to form monopolies in USA. This was an arrangement by which stockholders in several companies transferred their shared to a single set of trustees. In exchange, the stockholders received a certificate entitling them to a specified share of the consolidated earning of the jointly managed companies. The trust came to dominate a number of major industries (tobacco, sugar, etc.) Monopsony: Is the opposite of a conventional monopoly in the sense that there is only a single buyer or only one dominant buyer for a product for which there are multiple sellers. Some companies are both monopolies and monopsonies. By being also a monopsonist, a monopoly can increase its profits even further by putting pressure on the companies that supply inputs for its products to reduce their prices. Extreme cases Pure monopoly: One company has complete control over the supply or sales of a product for which there are no good substitutes. Perfect competition: There are many sellers of identical or virtually identical products. Causes of monopoly By developing or acquiring control over a unique product that is difficult or costly for others companies to copy. By having a lower production cost than competitors. By using various legal and illegal tactics (predatory tactics) By controlling a platform and using vendor lock-in. By receiving a government grant of monopoly status, becoming a government-granted monopoly. Advantages Despite their reputation for evil, monopolies can actually generate a net benefit for society under certain circumstances. These are usually situations in which the power and duration of the monopoly are carefully limited. Natural monopolies can be particularly beneficial. This is because of their ability to attain lower costs of production, often far lower, than would be possible with competitive firms producing the same product in the same region. However, it is almost always necessary for such monopolies to be regulated by a relatively uncorrupted government in order for society to obtain the potential benefits. This is because such monopolies by themselves, as is the case with all monopolies, have little incentive to charge prices close to cost and, rather, tend to charge profit-maximizing prices and restrict output. Likewise, there is often little incentive to pay much attention to quality. It has long been recognized that government-granted monopolies can benefit society as a whole by providing financial incentives to inventors, artists, composers, writers, entrepreneurs and others to innovate and produce creative works. In fact, the importance of establishing monopolies of limited duration for this purpose is even mentioned in the U.S. Constitution. Disadvantages Large monopolies have considerable potential to damage both economies and democratic governments and monopolists often go to extreme lengths to disguise or hide such harmful effects. Example The table below illustrates the case of monopoly. Marginal cost is the value of the additional resources needed to produce another unit of output. The marginal benefit to consumers is the price that consumers are willing to pay for each unit. You should recognize this column as a demand curve. The maximization principle tells us that the economically efficient amount to produce is five, the amount that gives consumers the greatest value. To produce the first unit, the firm takes resources that have a value of $5.00 and turns them into something with a value of $7.01. Because this transformation has increased value, producing the first unit is more economically efficient than producing none. By this logic, producing the sixth unit would decrease economic efficiency because the firm would take resources with a value of $5.00 and transform them into something with a value of only $4.51. The monopolist, however, will find it most profitable to produce only three units because it does not see marginal benefit the same way that buyers see it. For the seller, the extra benefit of the second unit is only $6.01. It sells the second unit for $6.51, but to sell the second unit, it had to reduce the price it charged by $.50. Thus, it lost $.50 on the first unit, so the net increase in its revenue was only $6.01. (You can get the same answer by computing a total revenue column and then calculating revenue increases.) In a similar manner, the rest of the fourth column can be obtained. Using the maximization principle, one can see that producing beyond the third unit is not in the interests of the firm. The fourth unit brings in added benefits of only $4.01 to the firm (it sells for $5.51, but to sell it, the firm lowers price by $.50 on three other units), but costs an added $5.00. From the point of view of the buyers, however, the fourth unit should be produced. It brings them added benefits of $5.51 and uses resources worth only $5.00.

Rotavirus Essay -- Biology Protein Synthesis

Every year it kills approximately 1 Million children world wide. The invader sneakes in unnoticed, takes over, all the while increasing in number as it goes. These children are falling victim to a rotavirus responsible for severe pediatric diarrhea. This rotavirus takes over in the human digestive tract, invading its cells and hijacking its protein synthesis machinery. This inhibits normal protein production in favor of a virus army. Children affected by this have had no chance of recovery, but now a glimmer of hope is visible on the horizon-a cure, whose secret lies in the virus' unique structure-a tunnel, which, like the fate of the virus, could be sealed. So, what is the Rotavirus actually doing?? Our bodies consist of many, many cells. These cells make up our skin, our bones, our heart, liver, stomachs. Inside of every single cell is a protein synthesis factory containing a protein called eIF4G that produces the proteins that each tissue, organ and everything else needs to be whole and function correctly. When a Rotavirus infects a human being it affects the cells in the digestive tract causing severe diarrhea. Pediatric diarrhea caused by this Rotavirus is directly responsible for the death of 1 million children around the world. This "blocker" is called an inhibitor. Inhibitors are used in modern day medicine to treat many illnesses by preventing the function of the invaders. Now that the structure has been discovered, the next step is to create a medication that will plug up the lock (viral NSP3's tunnel) and prevent the key (viral mRNA) from entering. This would effectively prevent viral takeover and putting a halt to suffering caused by pediatric diarrhea. Educational Reform Essay

The educational institutes today are more focused on academics & pay less attention to the physical attributes of the students. Physical educators along with academic teachers play an important part in promoting good health through regular physical activities. The number of obese children is increasing around the world. Research depicts that one in every ten; six years old child in England is obese. It is estimated that by the year 2020, 50% of the children would be obese. (BBC. co, 2004,) Lack of physical activity is said to be a cause for lowers academic achievements as well as overweight & obese individuals. The reason being, when the fundamental dietary & fitness needs are not met, the students show a decline in academics by giving a poor performance. A study in New York asserted that students’ intelligence & academic performance was affected by the slightest of malnutrition signs. Schools play a major role in developing the young minds & grooming them for a bright future, it must be kept in mind that physical education too is an imperative aspect of an individual’s life. Along with the P. E. courses the students should be advised about a proper diet intake. Children with poor nutritional habits, especially in the early years usually score low in vocabulary, reading & calculation. (Athletics Campus Life, 2007) It is calculated that 40% of American population is inactive & only 20% are slightly active. Mostly 50% of individuals drop out of exercise programs without even completing six months. The fact is that habits are developed at an early age. If the students are not facilitated with physical exercise courses at school, they will never form healthy workout habits. The schools these days are struggling to increase the student success rates, the children are over burdened with homework & extra classes, leaving no time for extracurricular activities. The Buffalo City School District in New York has decided to incorporate a physical education department starting from the very initial stage; the aim is to achieve better student grades, attendance & improved health. The students’ nutrition, active lifestyle & accomplishments are all interrelated. If the child is happy & healthy, he will perform well in every step he takes. Reducing 240 minutes per week in class time in favor of physical activity resulted in higher math scores. (Action for Healthy Kids, 2004) Students with the highest fitness scores scored the highest in their SAT exam. Being physically active also fortifies the student’s cognitive learning abilities & lowers anxiety & depression levels. It is derived from extensive research that the intake of oxygen during exercise benefits the neurons & increases the mind power. Overweight children are susceptible to develop physical ailments like blood pressure & diabetes in later life, not to mention the psychological effects by being teased in school causing a reclusive feeling, low self esteem & presently depression. The Cambridge Public Schools, in Massachusetts, discovered that almost 14% of children from the age group 9-13 were overweight due to sedentary routines. These students were being targeted for jokes & bullying. In order to facilitate the energy of hyperactive & sedentary students, at the same time improving their physical & social wellbeing; increased the activity programs at school targeting every student’s individual needs. This act may produce desirable results in the meantime confronting issues like obesity & bullying. But focus should be kept on the physical wellbeing of students; therefore it’s a better option to minimize competing activities. Sports & recreational competitions are a good way to realize one’s potential but may induce negative feelings in the losing opponent. Every school attempts to reach the highest target of excellence; this goals should set concern for the physical & mental growth of the students thus, expanding time for the physical & extracurricular activities for the children to indulge in. summer & winter breaks can also be utilized for such programs. Participating in such activities help the children to discover their strengths & uniqueness creating a feeling of achievement. They realize their interests & then design their future goals accordingly. A number of funds are use for the betterment of academic departments in schools. Some steps should be taken for designing the physical education department in order to achieve a positive impact on the confidence, self esteem & motivation of all the students. Each student should be dealt separately, so as to meet individual demands & improve their over all personality. A policy taken up by the Michigan State Board of Education Policy in September 2003 on Quality Physical Education confirms that well planned physical activities play a pivotal role in the student learning capabilities. They learn to incorporate their skills & abilities to the fullest in every field. They started a 150 minutes/week program for the elementary students & 225 minutes/week. (Michigan State- Resource Guide) Some of the ideas that can be incorporated for the betterment of students overall capabilities are:†¢ All students should be entitled to join the physical activity groups. Each age group should be handled separately so they can enhance their confidence, identify their personal. The physical education curriculum should be based on a rationally researched content. The proper equipment & tools should be provided by the school & a professional trainer should be hired to train the students. The individual strengths & abilities of students should be catered. Tests should be conducted to find out their endurance levels & body strengths & then target the problem areas for achieving a healthy & active student body. †¢ Athletics are very effective in the over all growth of children.  Basic levels of athletics should be coached to every student & advance courses available to those who are interested. †¢ The P. E. group can hold study groups & workshops to help the students with their weakness & provide them with proper nutritional guides. Several activities can be introduces involving interaction with friends & families of the students. For example few schools arrange sport days, running tracks & family fitness nights. After school activities can play a major role in inducing physical fitness in the students. The points to keep in mind are that †¢ the activities are convenient for the students †¢ the program contains enough intensity to make it challenging †¢ Variety of programs should be introduced so that the children are keen to partake in them. †¢ The weather conditions should be kept in mind & indoor gyms & recreational rooms should be set up in case of a rainy day. †¢ The parents & teachers should be encouraged to get involved with the students so they can help the children to live up to the best of their abilities.

about Knorr Soupy Noodles and estimating the reasons for the slow growth rate of Knorr soupy noodles in Goa. The report contains suggestions and recommendations to leverage the brand of Knorr Soupy Noodles in Goa. The Problem Soupy Noodles; launched in 2010 by Hindustan Unilever, under the brand of Knorr, has not managed to significantly bite into the market share of the herit age brand- Maggi Noodles.There is a market situation in Goa wherein there exist very erratic distribution of Knorr soupy noodles and the consumer has not yet received the efficient and sufficient supply of the same. Our research problem explored the awareness, availability of Knorr Soupy noodles and the taste preferences, brand perceptions of the consumers. The Method This qualitative study on Knorr soupy noodles which contains interview, questionnaire and observation has been done to find the brand health of Knorr Soupy Noodles in Goa.The study consisted of 3 phases; two exploratory phases and a conclusive research phase. A field study of various customers via experience interviews and in-depth interviews threw light on the various factors that influence the purchase of the product. Wet sampling was effectively conducted among students of Goa Institute of Management at Sanquelim, Goa. Our area under study was that of Sanquelim, Bicholim and Mapusa which represent similar catchment profiles to areas of Ponda, Valpoi and Quepem in Goa. Our total sample size consisted of 350 people. ConclusionThrough this research, a clear answer came out: Knorr Soupy Noodles is still the second choice to Maggi noodles(but above all the other instant noodles brands) and the various factors that contributed to this in descending order of importance was availability, visibility, price and lastly taste. The demand for the product exceeds the supply and the company needs to relook at its go-tomarket strategy and disrupt the market in terms of distribution and target segment (consider 20-25 age group). Although majority of the consumers would recommend Knorr Soupy noodles, their taste preference was still inclined towards Maggi noodles.The positives that were born from this study was that â€Å"Taste† is not the main reason why consumers are not picking up Knorr Soupy noodles but other factors like availability and price were responsible for this. 5 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodle s Market in Goa INTRODUCTION Objectives of the study The aim of this study is to help Hindustan Unilever to clarify the position of its brand â€Å"Knorr Soupy Noodles† in the instant noodle market of Goa, India and to study the various factors and reasons for the slow growth rate of Knorr Soupy noodles in the market The specific objectives of the study were; i.To study the extent of awareness towards Knorr soupy noodles, ii. To analyze factors influencing the buying behaviour of Instant Food Products/Knorr soupy noodles, iii. To estimate demand potential for Knorr soupy noodles, iv. Value of the study Firstly, as the objective if the study indicates, it will help Hindustan Unilever to clarify the position of the â€Å"Knorr Soupy noodles† brand in current Goan instant noodle market. Secondly, the study provides current situation of the instant noodle market and customers’ responses to different i nstant noodle brands.This study shall thus paint a clear picture as to where the Knorr soupy noodles brand stands in camparison to its biggest competitor, Maggi Noodles. The assumption is that the customer profiles of these catchment areas are similar to other areas in Goa like Ponda and Valpoi. 6 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa We did not consider the impact of substitute products in the instant food market like pasta , ready to eat paratha , instant idli m ixes etc while conducting the research. Consumer profiles of management students of GIM were taken and consumption patterns of this group may vary from other teenage/college going population The Wet Sampling was done with only two flavours ie.Chinese chow and Tomato chatpata flavour of Knorr soupy noodles Taste and Flavour can vary with mass production in wet sampling. The entire project was completed within 2 months in a cross sectional manner. The Instant Noodles Market in India Noodles are a commodity which is consumed by everyone, right from kids and teenagers to retirees. Two-and-a-half decades since its launch, ‘2 minute Maggi Noodles’ is the numero-uno brand in the Indian market. Nestle has virtually dominated the Indian noodle market till now but lately many large FMCG players and retail chains have launched their products in this lucrative space.Maggi enjoys a market share of over 70% today, despite the presence of a number of other brands. In the early 80s, th e conservative and typical food consumption era, the concept of ‘ready-to-cook’ food was alien to the Indian market. A decade ago the word †˜noodles’ was synonymous with Nestle’s ‘Maggi’. Indian noodle market (instant noodles) is estimated at INR 1,300 to 1,600 crores (USD 300 – USD 350 mn) in 2010. The market is dominated by instant noodles Nestle’s brand – Maggi The food habitats in India have changed due to the Western influence and the usage of these foods is on the rise.These foods are widely used in catering industries as well as at homes. There are varieties of instant/ready-to-eat foods available in the market to choose from and they have been a part of everyday life, according to the ASSOCHAM survey. Even though after being economical and convenient, 34% of the consumers prefer the traditional types of foods which are fresh and natural without any preservatives or artificial ingredients. There has been a major shift in food habits in the metropolitan cities, as about 86% of households prefer to have instant food (canned, instant mixes, baked, pasta, etc. . Reason s are the steep rise in dual income level and standard of living, convenience, influence of western countries etc. , according to a survey undertaken by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM). The survey points out that these convenience foods are preferred (86%) mainly by nuclear families where both husband and wife are working or by bachelors who wish to avoid hotel food or people who do not have time, patience or the expertise to prepare in a traditional method.Metropolitans are the largest consumers of processed food and are going to be the biggest consumers of processed food because of their ever increasing per capita income and lifestyle which is also changing very rapidly, points out D S Rawat, Secretary General, ASSOCHAM. Brand Awareness and LoyaltyIt was a couple of years back when big companies like GSK, HUL, ITC and Big Bazaar decided to enter the market. They entered the market through their power brands like Horlicks and Knorr. They offered a number of variants and flavours to the customers. As it is Maggi was never considered to healthy by the Indian mom. A survey conducted by Nielsen shows that Maggi’s market share has fallen by around 15 percent since the launch of these new brands. This happened in less than 2 years. As a result, Maggi has settled for standard flavours like curry, tomato, masala and chicken and hasn’t done much experimentation with other flavours. GSK, with its Horlicks extension has launched Foodles, which is a multigrain noodle, pegged as healthier alternative to Maida noodles which have been the most popular variant of Maggi. In terms of brand name all Horlicks, Knorr and Sunfeast have a wide ranging appeal because they have products that have extensive recall.Nestle is not sitting idle. They have reacted to the situation by launching its Multigrain noodles. It has also launched new flavours like curry and capsicum. They have come also come out with a new campaign to engage the consumer to retain brand loyalty. Through this interactive campaign they are trying to reinforce the emotional connect with its consumers. Factors influencing consumption The majority of the working class also mentioned that instant noodles are a boon to save time, energy and money by using these foods.Various foods helped to prevent the age-old traditional method of long preparation of grinding, cooking or fermenting for hours and hence making the work faster. Even the manufacturers prepared the instant foods according to the taste of the consumers. 92% of the nuclear family feel that they have less free time than before they had kids, it is now a common fact that they are spending less time in the kitchen, and are turning to takeout, delivered food, and semi-prepared meals to help feed the family at mealtime. 2% of bachelors prefer the convenience food because of less cost, time and energy saving, convenience in preparation and consumption in the busy and hectic life. The very term ‘instant† means sim ple, fast ,convenient and affordable food which is easy and fast to prepare besides being hygienic, free from microbial contamination and also convenient to eat, say the bachelors. 67% of working women revealed that the present trend changed the habits to foods which are simple and easy to digest. Hence, the existence of these foods fulfilled all the needs of modern human being. 2% of the respondent said that another advantage of instant foods that occupy less space in the kitchen or pantry, the amount of drudgery involved is less and there is a tremendous potential for commercial exploitation as it is a â€Å"rising industry†. The study tries to include varied relevant categories to ascertain the trend among these clusters.By taking the varied category we have tried to come out with issues (if any) and the opportunities. The detailed study has been carried out on the basis of demographics of gender, age and geographical area. Non-probability sampling has been used in selecting the samples which further is a blend of quota and convenience sampling. To ascertain the awareness of Soupy noodles (phase 1), our team surveyed 180 people from various areas like Sanquelim, Bicholim, and Mapusa. Surveyed people were segmented into 5 categories in terms of age (Below 20, 20-25, 25-30, 30-35, 35 and above) and also segmented on gender basis.During our second phase of exploratory research which consisted of interviewing retailers, a sample size of 40 retailers from Sanquelim and Bicholim were taken. These retailers owned stores right from 200sq. ft to 1000sq. ft. Our third phase of research included a sample of 138 management students from Goa Institute of Management. These students were further segmented on the basis of AGE, GENDER, GEOGRAPHY (North India, Middle India, East India, West India [south India sample was too small and hence not considered]). The approach adopted (Phase 1) was exploratory for customers who are given a semi structured questionnaire on physical paper and retailers (Phase 2) with whom we had unstructured interviews. Descriptive approach (Phase 3) via Google docs was adopted for students where in a detailed structured questionnaire had been used for interviewing the consumers after the wet sampling/tasting of soupy noodles at the GIM canteen.Students were also allowed to fill the Google doc as per their convenien ce so as to avoid long queues while collecting data. The table below gives a quick view of the data collection methodology. Figure 7 Data Collection Process Chart 16 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGN Questionnaire is being designed in two phases namely exploratory – customers (Phase 1) and descriptive- students (Phase 3). The questionnaire has been designed keeping in mind the research objective and the sample under study. Exploratory research of the customer, a semi structured questionnaire having three questions was prepared.The objective was to find out the awareness of Knorr Soupy Noodles. Our first question ‘Have you tasted Maggi Noodles’ was framed so as to select or target segment which in this exploratory research was assumed as ‘everyone who has tried Maggi Noodles is our target segment’. Discussion: People are asked three questions – Have you tasted Maggi noodles? (If YES then proceed to next, If NO then reject respondent) Have you heard about Knorr Soupy noodles? Have you tasted Knorr Soupy noodles? The purpose of the first question is to eliminate who do not form the part of our market i. e. ho do not consume Maggi noodles. Hence, people who have tasted Maggi noodles qualify for our target segment. The 2nd question aims at finding out the awareness level of Knorr Soupy noodles. And the next question becomes relevant as the next marketing strategy needs to cater those who have tasted Maggi. The combination of 2nd question and 3rd question will tell us the awareness translating into sales. During the2nd exploratory phase the retailers of various stores were asked question via conversation. The questions ranged from ‘What do you think about the brand Knorr soupy noodles? , ‘How is its supply? ’, ‘Do customers ask for Knorr Soupy noodles? ’, ‘Do you think it is better than Maggi noodles? ’ The Descriptive research questionnaire was a struc tured questionnaire having 35 questions. Questions were framed in order to extract their consumption behaviour and preferences of noodles so as to meet the objective of the research. For the Descriptive Research Questionnaire, the questionnaire was divided into three parts as follows: Part 1: Personal Information – To judge the impact of their background on their consumption behaviour.Part 2: Consumption Pattern – to study the knowledge of the brand and to unearth generic consumption patterns. 17 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa Part 3: To analyse the tastes and preferences based on the wet sampling The reason for this division is to segregate the information gathering and understand the impact of each part on their consumption behaviour. We wanted to study each part as a separate determinant for the consumption of noodles. ANALYTICAL TOOLS Our survey has relied on qualitative data collected in the form of interviews and descriptive questionnaire.SPSS is not being used as the data collected is qualitative and the same could be illustrated effectively via MS office tools like Excel. The questionnaire includes Likert’s scale (1 being least preferred-5 being most preferred) and rank order scale technique for comparative analysis. We have used M. S. Excel for the ease of calculation. There are some over lapping questions and effect of double counting has been taken into account to arrive at a useful and practical conclusion. Pie charts and histograms are integral part of our study and of immense help in drawing inferences.The inferences have been drawn on the basis of gender, age, geographies, and preferences. The trend can be seen from the tables showing numbers and frequency of people. 18 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa FINDINGS EXPLORATORY (CUSTOMERS): Awareness of consumers towards Knorr Soupy Noodles Our research shows that the targeted people are well aware of the product. Their key target group (below 20yrs) and 20- 25yrs have a high awareness rate of 78%. Awareness in older groups drops. The consumption of noodles is more frequent among the teenagers and that qualifies as our target market.Age-wise distribution: The awareness in age group below 20 is 78% (High), in the age group 20-25 is 76%, in the age group 25-30 is 57%, and in the age group 30-35 is 66%. It must be noted that the majority of people surveyed belong to age group below 25, which has high level of awareness. The consumption of noodles is more frequent among the teenagers and that qualifies as our target market. Gender Distribution: Figure 8 illustrates that there is no significant difference in the awareness between Females and Males and hence the marketing effectively targets both the genders.Figure 8 Product Awareness distribution in Females and Males. Purchase conversion rate (The number of people who are aware about Knorr Soupy Noodles and have purchased it is the purchase conversion rate) From the study we can infer that t he purchase conversion rate for Knorr Soupy noodles is low and customers who are aware of the product are not convinced to try out the product. 19 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa Age Wise Distribution: In the age group below 20 the purchase conversion rate is 38%, in the age group 20-25 it is 25%, in the age group25-30 it is 100% (High), in the age group 30-35 it is 50%.As mentioned above that the majority of the people belonged to below 25, where the purchase conversion is 33% (Moderate). The combined study of awareness and purchase conversion will be very useful in ascertaining the effectiveness of promotional activities and saleability of the product. EXPLORATORY FINDINGS (RETAILERS INTERVIEW): This is the part two of our phase 1 research, where in we interviewed 40 retailers about demand and distribution of soupy noodles. This part of research aims at exploring the functioning of the noodles market, competition, price elasticity of demand, and demand affected by avail ability of the product.As retailers are in a better position to tell us what a customer asks for and how he makes his buying decision. A few statements by some retailers are: â€Å"If the supply of Soupy noodles would have been fine, they would have taken over Maggi† †¦ Owner, Jai Bhavani Sweet Mart, Sanquelim â€Å"Incentives for displays are not given, and hence I don’t push the product to my customers† †¦ Anonymous retailer â€Å"Students see the ad on TV and ask for the product, but there is never proper supply and hence they take some other product† †¦ Owner, Om Prasad Bakery, BicholimDemand potential of Knorr Soupy noodles The interviews via random conversation with retailers threw light on the high demand for Knorr Soupy noodles during a particular phase when it was marketed via mass media. They also stated that the high demand was met with very poor supply which led to consumers shifting their repurchase decision to substitute brand s dude to unavailability. Demand is a function of price, income, price of substitute goods, choice and preference. Different determinants of demand play different role and no determinant can be studied in exclusivity. Demand potential of Soupy noodles is same as it is for Maggi.In the noodles market, Maggi has been a clear leader and best competitor to Maggi is Soupy noodles. There are factors which have an impact on people making choices between these two brands. Soupy noodles are priced higher than Maggi and some of the demand of soupy noodles might get affected by it being a price elastic market. Especially, when a heritage brand like Maggi is available at a lower price. Soupy noodles have an innovative concept of providing two food items at a time which is â€Å"noodles† and â€Å"soup†. The message is being transmitted strongly and customers are aware about it.However; the purchase conversion rate is not so impressive. The biggest reason might be the brand loyalty towards Maggi 20 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa and greater number of variants of Maggi. Soupy noodles have the potential of acquiring and influencing the brand loyalty but this is marred due to high recall, retention and re purchase intention of Maggi. Distribution of Knorr Soupy noodles HUL is known for its distribution and supply. However; in the case of Knorr soupy noodles, retailers have complaints about erratic distributors who do not supply sufficient stock of soupy noodles hence affect the availability.Like many other cases margins are not the issue of concern. Distributors refused to pay minimal amount for the prime facing location on the shelves and hence lose out on potential customer on account of lack of visibility even when it is available. DESCRIPTIVE FINDINGS (WET SAMPLING): 138 students from Goa Institute of Management were given tasting samples of Knorr Soupy Noodles (Chinese Chow) and were asked to respond within a questionnaire about their knowledge about and experience with the brand.There were 35 questions that had to be answered so as to acquire a deep understanding of the consumer’s perception about the brand. The findings are as below. FACTORS INFLUENCING THE CONSUMPTION OF INSTANT FOOD PRODUCTS The below chart shows a clear distribution of the various attributes that influence the consumption of instant food products. The attribute that influences the consumption the most is TASTE (42%) while PRICE (7%) and ADVERTISING (2%) are the factors that influence the purchase of instant noodles the least (assuming competitive pricing amongst competing brands).EASE OF MAKING (31%) and AVAILABILITY (18%) are factors that also significantly influence purchase decisions. Figure 9 Determinants of choice of noodles EATING PATTERNS OF STUDENTS PURCHASE FREQUENCY OF OUTSIDE FOOD (Non-canteen food) The study shows that students prefer eating outside and this could be due to the induced culture and socialising that lead students to c onsume non-canteen food. 21 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa The study shows 80 students (17% + 63%) out of every 100 eat food from outside at least 1-2 times a week.Maximum number of students (63%) eat outside 1-2 times a week while only 6% of the students eat out once in a month. The study throws light on the eating habits of students and concludes that majority of the students eat out at least once in 2 weeks. This segment is thus a very lucrative segment to target for instant food companies. PURCHASE FREQUENCY OF INSTANT NOODLES The study shows that instant noodles forms an important part of students menu especially due to shortage of time and erratic eating habits.Many consumers in colleges lead time-pressured schedules and have less time available for formal meals, as a result of which demand remains high for products which can be eaten at their convenience. The study shows that 48 students out of every 100 consume instant noodles at least 1-2 times a week i. e. that 61% out of the total number of students (80% from previous chart) eating outside (non-canteen food) consume instant noodles at least 1-2 times a week, while 22% of students of the total number of students eating outside consume instant noodles once in 2 weeks.Hence there is a great demand for instant noodles among students and instant food companies should effectively tap this. Gender-wise distribution: From the data we can prove that there is no significant difference (63% and 58%) in consumption habits of instant noodles amongst male and females. 22 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa Figure 10 Gender Wise Consumption pattern of noodles Geographic distribution The study reveals that there is a significant difference between the consumption patterns of customers based on geographic segmentation.The study states that maximum numbers of consumers who eat noodles on an everyday basis (19%) are from West India (Mumbai, Goa, Rajasthan, and Gujarat). Students from North India and West India have the highest frequency of instant noodles consumption (cumulative 80%). Figure 11 Geographic consumption pattern of noodles across India 23 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa BRAND PREFERENCES AMONG INSTANT NOODLES The study reveals that the number one brand preference amongst instant noodles is Maggi Noodles. Knorr Soupy Noodles is at the second place with almost similar preference ratings as Sunfeast Yippee.A startling revelation was that Horlicks Foodles (2nd highest market share amongst instant noodles-AC Neilsen) ranks at the bottom. Figure 12 Rank wise Brand Preference of Instant Noodles TASTE SATISFACTION OF KNORR SOUPY NOODLES The study reveals that only 2 people out of every 100 hate soupy noodles. On wet sampling of Knorr Soupy noodles amongst students of GIM, the study revealed that majority of the sampled population(56%) found Knorr soupy noodles PRETTY TASTY while 33% of the population found the taste OK which could lead them to easily shift loya lty to other brands.A shocking revelation was that only 1% of the sampled population was blown away (SIMPLY MIND BLOWING) by the taste and hence this could directly correlate to low brand loyalty which could be the reason why the early adopters consuming the product are high, but followers are not increasing as expected by the company. Consumers are not enthralled yet not dissatisfied about the taste and this can be seen from the charts below. 1% of the consumers that would recommend the product to others would purchase more of Knorr soupy noodles if its taste were to improve, while they would also preferred increase in promotional activity and availability.
